Indonesia Container Line  (ICON) opens new service  of Jakarta - Palembang, to add its domestic market in containerized trade.

Its first call at IPC TPK (IPC Container Terminal) Palembang taking place on Monday, May 21, was served by ICON Perdana, a 202 TEUS containership. On her first call, ICON Perdana loaded and unloaded as many as 93 TEUS and 22 TEUS containeried cargoes, respectively.

For ICON, Jakarta Palembang remains the third route it services in domestic container shipping after it came into the industry in 2012. This route adds the ICON services  of Jakarta-Pontianak and Jakarta-Banjarmasin and as many as four fleets are deployed for the routes.

"We have been joining the domestic market for more than five years. The market is quite good. And here we are, expanding to other routes, including this one (Jakarta-Palembang)," Benny Chia, ICON President Director, told Indonesia Shipping Gazette,  on the sideline of the ICON Perdana first call ceremony  at IPC TPK Palembang Terminal.

Benny is optimistic with the potencies of cargo from/to Palembang and South Sumatera in general, in view of the cargo and economy growth at the  province plus the improvement of terminal and port facilities and infrastructure that can trigger the economy and trade growth.

"We appreciate IPC TPK Palembang of its support for our call and its improvement in infrastructure and facilities, thus triggering cargo growth to and from Palembang," he said, calling for further support to ICON business at Palembang.

Meanwhile, IPC TPK welcomed this service, sent appreciation to ICON, and expressed commitment to provide optimal service. This susidiary of IPC that overtook the container terminal operation at Palembang Port since early this year expects that this ICON new service will contribute to the increase of this terminal  throughput.

"We say welcome to this service and  thanks to ICON that has decided  to open service to one of  our terminal. Surely, this will help our terminal to reach  higher and higher growth in volume," said Arif Rusman Yulianto, IPC TPK Commercial and Business Development Director.

"We don't see them (ICON) as just customer but further as our business partner. Hence, let us hand  in hand to build the business growth. Let us together support the trade and volume growth to and from this terminal," said Arif, promising to introduce ICON service to all cargo owners, both in Jakarta and Palembang.

"As we are saying we are partners. Hence, we care with the business sustainability of ICON, too," he said.

Throughput up 6%

No doubt, according to Arif, this service will help the throughput growth of Palembang be higher and higher.

Until April this year, IPC TPK Palembang throughput reached 52,750 TEUs, 40% of which are export, a 6% increase year on year.

"We hope the trend  will continue until the end of  the year," said Adi Saputra, IPC  TPK Area Manager for Palembang Terminal. In 2017, he  said, Palembang Terminal throughput reached 172,000 TEUS.

Palembang Terminal is now handling eight domestic calls and four oceangoing.
