The Inauguration of France’s Biggest Containership

Reported from, CMA CGM inaugurate their newest containership on September 6th 2018. This ship has become their new flagship container vessel. It was named Antoine de Saint Exupery, and it is the biggest France flag-bearer vessels.

The ceremony was held in Le Havre port, France, on September 6th 2018. The ceremony was led by France’s Minister of Economy, Bruno le Maire, and Minister of Transportation, Elisabeth Borne.

The ship was sent to CMA CGM on January 2018. It has started their services on France Asia Line (FAL) 1 since February 2018. FAL 1 is the longest sea route in the world. This route connects Asia and Northern Europe Region.

With the length of 400 meters and width of 59 meters, this vessels has the capacity of 20,600 TEUs, making this ship the biggest containership to hold the France’s flag. The length of this ships amount to four times of soccer field, and this ship size is bigger than Empire State Building and Eiffel Tower.

CMA CGM stated that this ship is equipped with ballast water treatment system that utilizes UV light to prevent the spread of invasive species from ballast water. By using the Becker Twisted Fin, the ships can improve their propeller performances and helps to reduce the energy consumption. The new generation engine used on this ship is claimed to be able to reduce the oil consumption by 25% and the fuel consumption by 3%. It also claim to be able to reduce the average CO2 emission by 3%.

The ships was named from name of a France writer, poet, and aviator that has been known throughout the world. Antoine de Saint Exupery works which has been known is ‘Wind, Sand and Stars’.

There are 2 more ships with the same capacity of 20,600 TEUs, aside from Antoine de Saint Exupery that was ordered by CMA CGM. CMA CGM ordered these ship from Subic, Philippine based company, Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction on 2015. The other ship that is being ordered in the same time is CMA CGM Louis Bleriot, which will be delivered to CMA CGM by the end of the year.

Before the arrival of Antoine de Saint Exupery, CMA CGM’s flagship was the CMA CGM Bougainville, a ships that is classed as Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) with a capacity of 18,000 TEUs. After the arrival of CMA CGM newest containership, the CMA CGM Bougainville position as the Flagship has been taken over by Antoine de Saint Exupery.
