JICT Shows Sustainability Commitment Through Mangrove Planting and Coral Reef Restoration

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, PT Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) has launched a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Environmental Project focused on ecological restoration. The company is making significant strides to restore Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems by planting mangroves and rehabilitating coral reefs in areas affected by deforestation and marine degradation in the Thousand Islands, Jakarta.

Recognizing the critical role of mangroves in protecting coastal areas from erosion, storms, and rising sea levels, JICT has initiated a large-scale mangrove planting project. Mangrove forests act as natural barriers against extreme weather events and help prevent coastal erosion, safeguarding both communities and marine habitats.

In partnership with Hutchison Ports Indonesia, JICT Green Dock School (SMA Negeri 13 North Jakarta), and various environmental NGOs, JICT aims to restore damaged mangrove ecosystems by planting a significant number of new seedlings. This initiative not only restores biodiversity but also provides sustainable livelihoods for local communities involved in the project. By preserving these vital ecosystems, JICT contributes to Indonesia’s broader climate resilience strategy and helps mitigate the effects of climate change.

Coral Reef Restoration: A Lifeline for Marine Biodiversity

In addition to mangrove restoration, JICT is committed to rehabilitating Indonesia’s coral reefs, which are essential for marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities dependent on fisheries and tourism. Coral reefs provide shelter for diverse marine life, acting as nurseries for fish and other sea creatures, and are crucial for maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems.

JICT’s coral reef restoration efforts include transplanting healthy coral fragments to degraded reefs, promoting regeneration, and enhancing the overall health of marine environments. By restoring these reefs, JICT not only supports marine conservation but also fosters the recovery of local fisheries and eco-tourism, delivering long-term economic benefits to surrounding communities.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

JICT’s initiatives reflect a broader commitment to sustainability, aligning with global environmental goals and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company recognizes that sustainable practices are vital for the longevity of its operations and the well-being of the communities and environments in which it operates.

“We believe that environmental sustainability is integral to our business model. Our efforts to plant mangroves and restore coral reefs demonstrate our commitment to safeguarding Indonesia’s rich coastal ecosystems for future generations,” said Ade Hartono, President Director of JICT. “This is just one of the many ways we aim to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.”
