Subsidiary of state-owned oil company PT Pertamina – PT Pertamina Internasional Shipping (PIS) – will invest as much as $1.6 billion for procurement of 69 fleets (vessels) in the next ten years, the company top executive has said.
The procurement of these new fleets is a part of PIS strategy to go to green industry.
CEO PT Pertamina International Shipping Erry Widiastono said with such investment, the company can add as many as 69 units of vessel, both second hand vessels and new built. These new fleets will make PIS have 164 units in total, from currently 95 units which are now in operation.
In addition, PIS has also prepared a roadmap to become a greener integrated marine logistics company.
PIS conducts several programs called “green shipping”. This program focuses on aspects of ship building and management.
“PIS is committed to environmental improvement, and also in line with business expansion. In addition, PIS also supports the implementation of ESG in operations and business. One of them is by presenting environmentally friendly ship technology,” Erry said in an official statement this morning, Friday, February 18, as quoted by Kontan.
Erry explained that the environmentally friendly ship technology program aims to reduce ship exhaust gases. The ship owned by PIS uses low sulfur fuel and is equipped with installing equipment that can help lower and block the ship’s exhaust gases.
“This technology has been applied to two carrier ships belonging to PIS, namely Pertamina Pride and Pertamina Prime. The construction of new PIS ships will also apply eco-friendly ship technology,” Erry explained.
In addition to technology utilization, PIS also applies energy efficiency by reducing ship berthing time to minimize emissions. The commitment to reduce exhaust emissions is carried out by calculating the Energy Efficiency Existing Index (EEXI), which currently has a study of 57% of PIS vessels or 54 units of 95 PIS vessels.
