Making Safety as Corporate Culture, SPTP Appoints 48 Safety Champions

PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas Sub-holding (SPTP), operator of all Pelindo terminals nationwide, commits to continue campaigning work safety and make it as a corporate culture, in a bid to create safe and more effective container terminal operational activities.

The company has appointed 48 operational workers from all container terminals as “safety champions”. They serve as management representatives to support the implementation of “safety culture” within the SPTP Group.

Commending this, Director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Putut Sri Muljanto revealed that “safety” is an important thing in port operational activities, both container and non-container terminals. He said the “safety culture” is so crucial as any port activities are high-risk of potential accidents.

“It calls concern from all workers as “safety” starts from each individual to carry out activities correctly and safely,” Putut said on his remark speech to open the SPTP 2023 Safety Transformation Event, in Bogor, on Tuesday, September 10.

To support a terminal with high priority on safety, according to Putut, also requires an improvement in operation (terminal operation). The operation, he said, should meet the standards as applied in any world-class ports. This also includes concern for the maintenance of equipment and facilities in the terminal.

Echoing the view, SPTP President Director M. Adji said that “safety culture” requires a strong commitment from all corporate parties, from top leaders until staffs. He asked all leaders within the company to have a “roadmap” and to be a role model for implementing “safety” in the group.

He named 3 things as “quick wins” in implementing “safety”: safety induction, sterilization of container terminals, and minimum requirements to support “safety” at container terminals.

Adji reminded that 90% of accidents in the container terminal area were caused by workers’ unsafe behaviour, while the remaining 10% is due to unsafe conditions. Therefore, changing workers’ behaviour remains SPTP top priority.

“Safety is part of the SPTP transformation roadmap, because it includes activities to change workers’ behaviour. And to make this roadmap work, we have appointed 48 safety champions who are expected to influence all parties carrying out activities in the terminal area to prioritize occupational safety and health,” said Adji.

Harbourmaster and Port Authority of Sorong Jece Julita Piris earlier said that the implementation of “safety” at TPK Sorong is now getting better. Workers, especially loading and unloading workers who work at TPK Sorong, increasingly understand the importance of safety when working in the terminal area.

According to Jece, to make “safety” as a corporate culture requires firmness of the terminal.

“Pelindo at TPK Sorong is currently strict with workers who carry out activities in the terminal. They are also given knowledge or socialization regarding safety, including the use of personal protective equipment when carrying out work in container terminals,” said Jece.
