Users Admit Efficiency of Jambi Port Transformation Programs, but Call for Competitive Tariff

Port users admit that the transformation programs of Jambi Port have significantly improved port services, but they call for tariff competitiveness thus the port will still be the choice of customers, especially in loading/unloading break bulk cargoes.

Currently, Jambi Port handled both container and non-container cargoes, including break bulk cargoes. This port handles almost all container from this province, but it is not a dominant player in handling the break bulk, the leading cargo of coal from the province in particular. The coal cargoes are shared to hundreds of TUKS (owned terminals) along the Batanghari River.

According to data, Jambi Port handled 306,569 tons of non-containerized cargoes in 2023, significantly increasing from 241,964 tons in 2022. The container, meanwhile, reached 34,996 TEUs, with steady growth year on year.

“Pelindo has shown improvement in services, thanks to its transformation through digitalization,” commends Teddy Herlambang, Chairman of Indonesia Shipping Agencies Association Chapter Jambi (ISAA Jambi).

He admitted that Pelindo Jambi has adopted a new digital-based system overall its services, including in shipping/ship call services. “The system has been socialized. And, we totally support it for service efficiency,” he said.

In addition to the system application, Teddy also hails for the Pelindo openness in building communication with port users.

However, he reminds Pelindo to set up a more competitive tariff, especially the loading/unloading tariff of break bulk cargoes, especially coal and CPO (crude palm oil). “There are so many TUKS around this port. Hence, Pelindo Jambi is expected to set up a more competitive tariff, thus it will not be left by cargo owners,” he said.

In responding this, Deputy General Manager for Commercial of Pelindo Regional 2 Jambi Rahmat Sururi explained that Pelindo is very open to any in inputs from port users. He said, Pelindo would continue to build coordination with port users, including with the association.

“Thanks to all our customers who have been ready with our new system (digital-based system). The application of this system is totally meant to improve services and for efficiency,” Rahmat told Indonesia Shipping Gazette on March 4.
