The Jakarta International Container Terminal 2 (JICT 2) is projected to handle up to 500,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually once it begins operations, boosting the overall capacity of Indonesia’s leading port, Tanjung Priok, into 12 million TEUs, from currently 11.5 million TEUs per annum.
Currently undergoing revitalization, JICT 2 is scheduled to be completed by 2026, with operations expected to commence in 2027.
State-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) aims to finish the revitalization and reconstruction of JICT 2 by 2026, with full operational capacity anticipated for 2027.
Adi Sugiri, Executive General Manager of Pelindo Regional 2 Tanjung Priok, confirmed that JICT 2, which has been used primarily as a parking space for several years, is now undergoing extensive revitalization and reconstruction.
“God willing, the project will be completed in 2026, and we expect operations to begin in 2027,” Adi stated at the IPEC Seminar on Business Opportunities in Shipping, Ports, Logistics, and Supply Chain 2025, held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
Adi further explained that construction work began nearly six months ago, with the revitalization contract slated to take up to two years. As a result, JICT 2 is expected to be operational with state-of-the-art equipment by early 2027.
Once completed, JICT 2 will feature a quay nearly 500 meters in length, capable of accommodating approximately 500,000 TEUs. Additionally, the quay will be raised by 1.2 meters to ensure better functionality.
According to Pelindo’s records, the plan to revitalize the international terminal has been in progress since 2019. At that time, it was revealed that outdated container cranes and rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs) had to be removed, prompting the need for new equipment. Alongside equipment upgrades, significant repairs to the quay are also required.
Pelindo is investing IDR 200 billion in the repair and replacement of both equipment and quay infrastructure, ensuring JICT 2 will be equipped for modern, efficient operations upon its reopening.
Designated for Domestic Trade?
Earlier, Pelindo President Director, Arif Suhartono, revealed that the revitalization of the facility would involve repairs to the container yard and the deepening of the former JICT-2 dock pool. The depth will be increased from the previous -9 meters Low Water Spring (LWS) to -12 meters LWS.
“We will proceed with the deepening of the former JICT-2 dock. The terminal will still be designated for container services,” he said
However, Arif did not yet confirm whether the former JICT-2 would be designated for ocean-going container services (export/import) or inter-island (domestic) services. This is particularly relevant given the ongoing development of the New Priok Container Terminal (NPCT) or NPCT-2, which aims to boost capacity for ocean-going container services at Tanjung Priok Port.
“What’s clear is that we are focusing on the repair process of the former JICT-2. As for whether it will serve domestic or international routes, we haven’t made a decision yet,” Arif stated.
Currently, there are five container terminal facilities at Tanjung Priok Port serving import/export operations: JICT, TPK Koja, NPCT-1, MAL Terminal (NPH), and Terminal 3 of Tanjung Priok Port.
