In a significant move to restore optimal sea access at one of Sumatra’s key maritime gateways, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) has announced that two large-capacity dredging vessels are on their way to Pulau Baai Port in Bengkulu. The deployment aims to address the ongoing issue of sedimentation that has hindered port operations in recent months.
The vessels—CSD Costa Fortuna 3 and AHT Costa Fortuna 5—are being dispatched from Batam. These high-powered dredgers are part of a broader revitalization plan designed to normalize the port’s channel depth, enabling the safe and efficient passage of heavily loaded cargo ships.
“This effort reflects our commitment to ensuring the reliability of maritime logistics in Bengkulu,” said S. Joko, General Manager of Pelindo Regional 2 Bengkulu. “We’ve coordinated closely with relevant stakeholders, and the dredgers are scheduled to arrive shortly to begin the work.”
The project will focus on deepening and widening the existing shipping channel, which has become increasingly shallow due to sediment buildup. In recent years, the problem has disrupted maritime traffic, limiting access for larger vessels and affecting the region’s supply chain efficiency.
Pelindo is working in coordination with the Harbor Master’s Office, Port Authority, and the Bengkulu Regional Government to ensure the dredging process adheres to technical and environmental standards. The operation is designed to proceed swiftly while minimizing ecological impact.
Once completed, the dredging is expected to significantly enhance Pulau Baai Port’s operational capacity, improving the flow of ships and cargo and reducing logistics costs across Sumatra’s western corridor. The project also marks a strategic investment in the infrastructure supporting Indonesia’s national maritime logistics network.
