IPC Container Terminal (IPC TPK) has partnered with several shipping companies to carry out a coral reef restoration program in waters off Lampung, as part of efforts to support marine conservation and sustainable port ecosystems.
The initiative took place on April 25 near Pahawang Island and involved six shipping partners: Caraka Tirta Perkasa, Meratus Line, Indo Container Line, Temas Line, Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines and Tresna Muda Sejati.
The activity forms part of IPC TPK’s environmental and social responsibility program and marks its second such collaboration with customers, reflecting a broader push to involve stakeholders in sustainability efforts.
“This conservation program reflects IPC TPK’s commitment to aligning business operations with sustainable principles,” acting Commercial and Business Development Director Yanuar Evyanto said. “Marine sustainability is a shared responsibility, particularly for companies operating in the maritime sector.”
Participants deployed 35 planting racks containing 280 coral seedlings on the seabed. The site was selected for its high biodiversity potential, although parts of the reef have been degraded by climate change and human activity.
Healthy coral reefs help maintain marine biodiversity, protect coastlines and support local tourism, while also contributing to water quality and sediment control — factors important for port operations, the company said.
IPC TPK said it has conducted coral planting and rehabilitation programs since 2017 as part of its long-term environmental strategy.
Globally, coral reefs are under increasing pressure. Data from the International Coral Reef Initiative show that between January 2023 and March 2025, heat stress contributed to bleaching across about 84% of the world’s coral reefs, marking one of the most severe periods of damage on record.
The program also involved the Lampung Underwater Community, which provided education on reef protection during the activity.
A representative of Meratus Line, Ketut Bambang, said the initiative helped strengthen ties between IPC TPK and its partners while contributing to environmental preservation. IPC TPK said it plans to monitor the growth of the coral seedlings to ensure long-term impact and hopes the initiative will encourage broader participation from the logistics sector in protecting Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.
