Throughput at Container Terminal Merauke (TPK Merauke) in Indonesia’s South Papua province rose sharply in 2025, driven by operational reforms aimed at easing logistics flows in the eastern region, port officials and shipping executives said.
Throughput at the port reached 52,712 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the year, up about 13.5% from 46,427 TEUs in 2024, reflecting stronger logistics activity and improved port efficiency.
The growth follows a series of operational changes introduced by the terminal operator, including tighter planning controls, structured handovers between shifts and regular performance evaluations, according to Terminal Head Muhammad Rasul Irmadani.
“These measures have improved coordination between operators, shipping lines and stevedoring workers,” Rasul said, adding that the changes have helped reduce berthing times and overall port stays.
Shipping companies have welcomed the improvements but warned that rising volumes could strain existing facilities. Bondan Wahyu Eko Hardianto, branch manager of PT Tanto Intim Line in Merauke, said container yard capacity would need to be expanded to prevent congestion.
“Container volumes from all shipping lines continue to increase and could affect ship turnaround times,” he said, calling for early discussions on container movements to any new yard, as well as future operating arrangements and tariffs.
Indonesia’s port authority said cooperation among stakeholders would remain critical as traffic grows. Julivan C.H. L. Salindeho, head of the Merauke Port Authority (KSOP), said the agency was focused on ensuring safety and smooth operations while supporting regional economic development.
“Synergy between port operators, service users and regulators is key to sustaining container growth and supporting Merauke’s economy,” he said.
The port operator plans to add handling equipment and expand container yard capacity, including the development of an off-dock depot to accommodate rising demand.
Authorities expect the combination of operational reforms and infrastructure investment to further strengthen Merauke’s role as a logistics hub for South Papua and the wider eastern Indonesia region.
