New agreement expands collaboration to boost logistics, support agribusiness, and unlock regional growth in Eastern Indonesia.
In the evolving story of Eastern Indonesia’s economic transformation, a new chapter unfolded in Medan on April 29, 2025. PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), through its Pelindo Regional 4 division, signed an important addendum to its existing cooperation agreement with PT Agro Makmur Raya – an agribusiness player committed to advancing Indonesia’s plantation sector.
The agreement, signed by Executive Director 4 of Pelindo Regional 4, Abdul Azis, and PT Agro Makmur Raya’s Junior Manager, Johny Liem, marks a significant move to optimize land assets at Bitung Port.
The partnership centers around the development of a palm oil processing unit and supporting infrastructure on land managed by Pelindo, but its ambitions reach far beyond.
This collaboration doesn’t just stop at land use. Both parties agreed to explore broader cooperation in port-related services, ranging from cargo loading and unloading to logistics, container management, and marine services, especially within the operational area of Bitung Port.
Their shared goal is to strengthen the logistical arteries that power agricultural and plantation product distribution across North Sulawesi and beyond. “This is more than a land-use deal. It’s a strategic push to transform our ports into engines of regional growth,” said Abdul Azis.
“By partnering with companies like Agro Makmur Raya, we’re shaping ports not only as transit points but as active economic hubs centered around the strengths of each region.”
For Agro Makmur Raya, the collaboration presents a timely opportunity to enhance the efficiency of its supply chains, especially for crude palm oil (CPO) and its downstream products.
“Bitung is a crucial logistics hub,” said Johny Liem. “Its location gives us access to both domestic and international markets. With Pelindo’s support, we can unlock new value for our agro-industrial operations and help ensure smoother distribution of products from this part of Indonesia.”
But this partnership represents more than just business synergies. It’s part of a broader vision, Pelindo’s aspiration to lead the development of an integrated, world-class maritime logistics ecosystem.
By turning underutilized port land into centers of industrial activity, the company aims to catalyze regional development, create jobs, and open new avenues for local entrepreneurs.
With this latest agreement, Bitung Port is poised to become not just a gateway for goods, but a symbol of Eastern Indonesia’s economic potential.
