ALFI Pushes for Stronger TPS – Central Java Hinterland Connectivity

The Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI) is promoting closer integration between PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) and industrial estates across Central Java and Yogyakarta, aiming to streamline container flows and cut logistics costs in the region.

During a working visit to TPS on Thursday, ALFI’s Central Java and Yogyakarta executive boards underscored the strategic importance of the Surabaya-based terminal, a subsidiary of Pelindo Terminal Petikemas, in facilitating both domestic and international trade.

“Connectivity between TPS and industrial estates in Central and East Java is key to improving logistics efficiency,” said ALFI Regional Chairman Teguh Arif Handoko. “It reduces travel time, lowers distribution costs, and supports national competitiveness.”

Teguh called for better port-industrial estate integration to accelerate container movement, ease exporter-importer access to terminal services, and strengthen supply chain reliability. “This synergy will help boost export trade and domestic goods distribution,” he added.

TPS Operations Director Noor Budiwan said the terminal continues to modernize its infrastructure and operations to support this goal. Recent upgrades include a new Terminal Operating System (TOS), online booking services, and the piloting of a Terminal Booking System (TBS) to improve turnaround times and equipment productivity.

In 2024, TPS recorded its highest-ever throughput at nearly 1.6 million TEUs. By July 2025, volumes reached 908,136 TEUs, with the terminal maintaining an 83% market share in international container handling at Tanjung Perak Port.

ALFI delegates toured the terminal to observe operations, including digital goods flow management and truck queuing systems. The visit also highlighted TPS’s provision of fumigation and inspection services for salted rawhide on Line I, a facility ALFI hopes can be replicated in Semarang.

East Java ALFI Chairman Sebastian Wibisono welcomed the exchange, citing it as a model for regional collaboration. “This is a valuable step in reducing logistics costs and replicating best practices in other ports,” he said.

TPS expects continued growth amid rising export demand and industrial raw material imports, reinforcing its role as a national logistics hub. Noor Budiwan said the company remains focused on expanding capacity and service quality.
