PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS), one of the country’s key international container terminals, reported stable growth in container throughput for the first eight months of 2025, bolstered by strong export activity and improved operational performance.
TPS handled 988,526 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of international containers from January to August 2025, marking a 1.05% increase from 978,214 TEUs in the same period a year earlier. Overall throughput—combining domestic and international traffic—reached 1,032,624 TEUs, slightly up 0.17% from 1,030,813 TEUs in 2024.
Export activity drove much of the increase. Outbound shipments rose 2.42% year-on-year to 489,876 TEUs, while imports dipped 0.26% to 498,650 TEUs over the same period. In August, TPS posted a modest trade surplus, with exports accounting for 51% of total volume, consistent with the previous month’s figures.
Domestic container traffic, however, declined to 44,098 TEUs, down from 52,599 TEUs last year.
“TPS continues to strengthen its role as a national logistics hub by prioritizing sustainability and improving operational capabilities,” said Erika Asih Palupi, Corporate Secretary of TPS. She credited the growth to reliable service standards and deeper coordination with logistics stakeholders.
TPS operates a modern terminal facility at Tanjung Perak Port, featuring a 1,000-meter international quay and a 450-meter domestic quay, supported by 12 electric container cranes (e-CC) for efficient cargo handling.
The terminal also saw an uptick in vessel calls, rising 3.21% from 810 in 2024 to 836 this year.
In terms of productivity, TPS averaged 52 boxes per ship per hour in loading and unloading operations, exceeding the 48-box minimum standard set by the Ministry of Transportation’s Tanjung Perak Port Authority (KSOP).
TPS continues to dominate the international container segment at Tanjung Perak, maintaining an estimated 83% market share.
Palupi emphasized that the company’s consistent performance reflects growing trust from service users and highlights TPS’s readiness to support national trade growth.
