A student team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) won first place at the third Innovation Challenge of Excellence (ICON 3.0), presenting a smart port safety solution that integrates artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable technology.
The competition, held by PT Integrasi Logistik Cipta Solusi (ILCS), a subsidiary of state-owned port operator Pelindo, in collaboration with University of Indonesia’s Makaravox, aimed to highlight technological innovations that support the transformation of Indonesia’s logistics sector.
The ITB team, named Smooth Operator, developed a comprehensive port safety management system featuring AI-powered monitoring tools, sensor-equipped wearables, and an integrated digital dashboard. The solution is designed to enhance worker safety, environmental oversight, and equipment monitoring in real-time.
Four-Pillar Innovation
The prototype includes four core components:
- Smart Safety Vest & Gloves: Wearables embedded with sensors to monitor heart rate, oxygen levels, body temperature, and worker location. The gear issues real-time alerts via sound, light, and vibration in response to signs of fatigue or health risks.
- Environmental Monitoring: Detects hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂), along with temperature and humidity readings. The system is linked to a siren and central dashboard.
- Crane & Cargo Detection: Sensors mounted on cranes to detect cargo movement anomalies and prevent accidents through automated alarms.
- Integrated Dashboard: A centralized interface that consolidates data on worker health, environmental conditions, and equipment status. It includes features for emergency response, risk assessment, and historical data analysis.
The system is aimed at improving operational safety and supporting Indonesia’s efforts to raise its Logistics Performance Index (LPI).
Pelindo Backs Innovation Showcase
As part of the award, Pelindo has invited the winning team to present their innovation at the upcoming Pelindo Forum 2025 in Ciawi, Bogor.
“ICON 3.0 proves that Indonesia’s younger generation is capable of delivering impactful solutions to the logistics sector,” said Dimas Giri Prabowo, Corporate Secretary of ILCS. “Innovation in safety technology is essential to enhancing the country’s logistics competitiveness.”
Pelindo’s Head of Research and Innovation, Febriandika Anggia, said the collaboration reflects the importance of bridging academic research with industry needs.
“This innovation underscores the value of synergy between universities and industry players,” he said. “These breakthroughs are vital to driving transformation in Indonesia’s port operations.”
ICON 3.0 was themed “Empowering Logistics Through Innovation: From Youth, For Indonesia,” and is part of a broader initiative to build a technology-focused, industry-academia ecosystem in the logistics sector.
