PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) recorded a modest increase in international container throughput in 2025, supported by stronger export and import activity toward the end of the year and steady terminal productivity.
Container traffic rose 4.03% month-on-month in December to 138,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up from 132,000 TEUs in November, the company said. International containers accounted for 130,000 TEUs of the December total, while domestic containers contributed 8,000 TEUs.
In November, international container throughput stood at 125,000 TEUs, with domestic volumes at 7,000 TEUs.
For the full January–December 2025 period, international container throughput reached 1.509 million TEUs, edging up 0.06% from 1.508 million TEUs a year earlier. Overall container throughput, including domestic and international flows, declined slightly by 0.45% year-on-year to 1.57 million TEUs from 1.58 million TEUs, which the company attributed to an imbalance between domestic container volumes and vessel calls.
TPS operates an international terminal with a 1,000-metre quay and a 450-metre domestic quay, supported by 12 electric container cranes to improve loading and unloading efficiency.
Export activity strengthened in December, with export container volumes rising 5% from the previous month to 62,000 TEUs. Import volumes also increased, climbing 2.98% to 68,000 TEUs.
Over the full year, exports accounted for 49% of total container flows, or 741,000 TEUs, while imports represented 51%, equivalent to 767,000 TEUs. The export-import ratio was unchanged from 2024, when exports totaled 743,000 TEUs and imports reached 765,000 TEUs.
Vessel traffic also increased in 2025, with ship calls rising 5.43% to 1,281 visits, compared with 1,215 visits the previous year.
“The growth in container traffic shows that TPS has maintained solid operational performance amid dynamic global logistics conditions,” said Erika Asih Palupi, a TPS representative, adding that reliable terminal services and streamlined operational processes underpinned the improvement.
Exporters welcomed the performance. Boy George Rahman, deputy chairman of the East Java chapter of the Indonesian Export Companies Association (GPEI), said service enhancements at TPS had helped support smoother logistics operations.
“Truck round time is below 30 minutes, which improves time efficiency for exporters,” he said.
TPS reported an average loading and unloading productivity rate of 52 boxes per ship per hour in 2025, exceeding the minimum standard of 48 boxes set by the Tanjung Perak Port Authority. The company also retained a dominant position in the international container segment, with an 83% market share at Tanjung Perak Port.
