Sorong Container Terminal (TPK Sorong) recorded container throughput of nearly 61,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of about 12% and reflecting growing economic activity in Southwest Papua, the terminal operator said.
As of Dec. 31, 2025, TPK Sorong handled 60,992 TEUs, exceeding its annual business plan target of 55,445 TEUs by around 10% and surpassing the 2024 volume of 54,422 TEUs, according to company data.
The growth was driven largely by regional development projects following the establishment of Southwest Papua Province, particularly infrastructure and government-led construction in Sorong City and surrounding areas.
Increased transshipment activity through nearby Petrose Port in Sorong Regency also contributed to higher container volumes, with cargo routed from Ambon to Petrose and onward to Sorong.
“This achievement is the result of continuous operational transformation, especially in planning, control and teamwork across the terminal,” TPK Sorong Terminal Head Welta Selfie said in a statement.
Looking ahead to 2026, terminal management plans to focus on improving service quality through equipment upgrades and workforce development, aiming to shorten vessel turnaround times and reduce cargo dwell time at the port.
The terminal also plans to strengthen coordination with key stakeholders, including government agencies, regulators and port-related associations, as part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency.
TPK Sorong aims to position itself as a reliable and competitive container terminal supporting economic growth and logistics connectivity in Sorong, a key gateway to Papua.
Industry players welcomed the performance. Wawan, chairman of the Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI/ILFA) for Sorong ports, said rising container volumes would create new opportunities for logistics and transport companies.
“The increase in container traffic is a positive signal for logistics service providers,” he said.
“We hope TPK Sorong will continue to prioritize service quality improvements for its users.”
