Belawan Receives Two QCCs, Four RTGs

Two quay container cranes (QCCs) and four rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) will support PT Prima Multi Terminal’s operations, boosting productivity, reducing vessel turnaround times, and strengthening logistics connectivity in western Indonesia

Belawan Port has received two quay container cranes (QCC) and four rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) as part of PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas’ (PTP) terminal modernization program aimed at increasing operational capacity and improving logistics efficiency.

The six SANY-manufactured cranes, imported from China, will be deployed at PT Prima Multi Terminal (PMT). The additional equipment is expected to improve container-handling productivity, shorten vessel turnaround times, and enhance yard operations at one of Indonesia’s busiest ports.

The cranes arrived aboard the heavy-lift vessel MV HAI TENG 007, which is designed to transport oversized cargo, including industrial machinery and port equipment. The vessel’s port agency services were handled by PT Pelayaran Tresna Muda Sejati, which coordinated its arrival, berthing, and cargo discharge.

“The ship’s berthing process went according to plan,” Sunarno, Deputy Director of Operation and Commercial at PT Pelayaran Tresna Muda Sejati, said.

He attributed the smooth operation to coordination among the ship’s agent, port authorities, terminal operators, and other parties involved in the unloading process.

Sunarno said the company has handled deliveries of port equipment to several locations across Indonesia and will soon oversee the arrival of another vessel transporting equipment to Pontianak.

The Belawan delivery forms part of SPTP’s 2026 investment program to modernize container terminal equipment nationwide. Under the program, the company plans to procure 13 new quay container cranes and 26 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, which will be deployed in stages at major terminals including Belawan, Surabaya, and Semarang.

The investment is intended to increase terminal capacity in line with growing container volumes while supporting more efficient cargo handling across Pelindo’s port network.

For Belawan, the additional cranes are expected to increase loading and unloading productivity and improve container movement within the terminal yard, enabling faster ship services and reducing congestion.

PMT, a subsidiary of Pelindo Terminal Petikemas, has managed the Belawan Domestic Container Terminal since 2023 and also operates the multipurpose terminal at Kuala Tanjung. The company has continued to expand terminal facilities and operational capabilities to support cargo flows in North Sumatra and western Indonesia.
