Indonesian Coal Miners See Growing Market Potential Under Trump’s Presidency

Indonesian coal mining company PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is optimistic about the future of the coal industry, driven by the positive impact of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.

PTBA Corporate Secretary Niko Chandra expressed confidence in the coal industry’s prospects, particularly in light of the global geopolitical shifts following Trump’s election as U.S. President.

“The outlook for the coal industry appears positive, especially considering the geopolitical developments after Trump’s election,” said Niko at PTBA’s Media Gathering in Bogor, West Java, on Saturday. “Given the current global conditions, there’s renewed hope for the coal sector.”

He added that Trump’s victory provided a sense of optimism for the coal industry, which had been facing significant challenges. “In the past, the coal industry was under pressure, but now there seems to be a shift,” Niko remarked.

Niko further noted that Trump’s election brought positive expectations for global geopolitical stability, which is anticipated to support the future growth of the coal industry. “In the global context, with the policies that Trump has set forth, it appears the coal industry will continue to thrive, much like in previous years,” he said.

PTBA remains optimistic about coal prices, with domestic demand serving as a key driver for the sector’s growth.

Post-COVID-19, domestic coal demand has continued to rise, fueled by increased energy requirements and infrastructure development. “The most significant growth is still driven by domestic demand,” Niko stated. “Looking at the post-pandemic landscape, demand is steadily increasing.”

One key factor supporting this demand is Indonesia’s ambitious 3-million-home construction program, which is expected to significantly boost energy needs. Additionally, PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, has seen growth in electricity consumption, further reflecting the country’s infrastructure expansion.

A recent 10% reduction in cement prices is also expected to spur construction activity, which will likely have a positive impact on coal demand. In addition to focusing on the domestic market, PTBA is expanding its reach internationally, particularly in developing countries. One of its target markets is Vietnam, where the company aims to increase its coal market share in the Southeast Asian region.
