PTP Nonpetikemas Cirebon Tightens Environmental Controls as Throughput Rises

PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok (PTP) Nonpetikemas, part of Pelindo’s Multi Terminal (SPMT) subholding, is ramping up measures to curb dust and improve environmental standards at the Port of Cirebon as coal handling volumes continue to grow.

The Cirebon branch, which manages dry bulk, liquid bulk and general cargo, has introduced a multi-layered dust-control system across its coal loading and unloading operations — a key activity supporting industries in Cirebon and surrounding regions.

The unit handles a variety of commodities, from coal, sand, clinker, cement and gypsum to liquid bulk products such as RBD palm oil, CPO, biodiesel and asphalt. General cargo includes heavy equipment, project cargo and pipes.

To reduce the spread of coal dust, the company has installed mist-spray nozzles on vessels, covered trucks immediately after loading, and set up washing points to rinse vehicles before they exit the port. Water-tank trucks regularly spray operational routes to keep road surfaces damp.

In areas near residential neighbourhoods, PTP has erected 12-metre-high protective nets fitted with spray nozzles to trap airborne particles.

“We ensure that every loading and unloading activity follows strict dust-control standards. Our focus is on maintaining a clean environment and ensuring port activities do not disrupt the community,” said Hari Priyatna, branch manager of PTP Nonpetikemas Cirebon.

Rising industrial demand has lifted throughput this year. By October 2025, the branch handled 3.2 million tonnes of cargo, up from 2.9 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier, an increase of about 7%.

Growth was led by dry bulk commodities such as corn, coal, clay, sand and quartz sand.

Operational productivity also improved. The branch logged 2,705.93 tonnes per ship per day (T/S/D) by October, beating its target of 2,468 T/S/D and exceeding it by 8.85%. The company said higher productivity has helped sustain the rise in cargo volumes.
