Samudera Indonesia Tbk (SMDR), an Indonesia’s leading public listed shipping company, has entered into a joint venture agreement with partners to develop and operate a container terminal at Patimban Port in West Java.
The joint venture company, PT Patimban Global Gateway Terminal (PGT), will oversee the terminal’s operations.
According to a statement on Samudera’s official website (samudra.id) on Friday, February 21, 2025, “PGT has signed a cooperation agreement with PT Pelabuhan Patimban International (PPI) to operate the Patimban container terminal for a period of 37 years.”
The development of the Patimban container terminal will commence soon, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2026.
“The container terminal will be developed in stages, with a targeted capacity of 3.7 million TEUs,” said SMDR management in the statement.
The consortium behind PGT includes Africa Global Logistics (AGL), Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC), and Samudera Indonesia (Samudera.
Africa Global Logistics (AGL) is the largest multimodal logistics operator in Africa, owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping operator. AGL operates in 49 countries with 250 subsidiaries and 23,000 employees. AGL holds a 45% stake in the Patimban Global Gateway Terminal.
Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) is a global trading company within the Toyota Group. TTC operates in approximately 130 countries and supports Toyota’s automotive business, as well as other operations within the Toyota Group. TTC holds a 34% stake in the Patimban Global Gateway Terminal.
Samudera Indonesia (Samudera) is an Indonesia’s leading private shipping, port, and logistics company with over 75 years of experience. Samudera operates across Indonesia and Asia. Samudera holds a 21% stake in the Patimban Global Gateway Terminal through its subsidiary, PT Samudera Pelabuhan Indonesia.
