The project, which runs from June 5 to June 14, is aimed at ensuring the long-term operational reliability of the port while supporting growing passenger and freight traffic in East Kalimantan.

Ferry services on the Kariangau–Penajam route will continue to operate normally during the rehabilitation period. Vessel berthing activities will be temporarily shifted to Pier 1 under an adjusted operational schedule designed to minimize disruptions to passengers and cargo movements.

ASDP President Director Heru Widodo said the infrastructure upgrade reflects the company’s commitment to safety and service reliability.

“The rehabilitation is a preventive measure to ensure port facilities remain reliable and safe while supporting public mobility and logistics distribution. All work is being carried out without compromising service quality during the repair period,” Heru said.

The repairs were initiated after the breasting dolphin structure at Pier 2 sustained repeated impacts from vessels during berthing operations, requiring immediate rehabilitation to maintain operational safety and service continuity.

ASDP is coordinating closely with regulators and other stakeholders to ensure vessel traffic remains safe, orderly and efficient throughout the project.

Following completion of the Pier 2 rehabilitation, the company plans to continue upgrading facilities at Pier 1, including rehabilitation works and an increase in the capacity of the movable bridge (MB), which connects vessels with the terminal and facilitates the movement of passengers and vehicles.

Muhammad Ramadhani, General Manager of ASDP’s Balikpapan Branch, said the Kariangau–Penajam route is currently served by eight ferries, including four ASDP-operated vessels: KMP Poncan Moale, KMP Goropa, KMP Gajah Mada and KMP Dingkis.

“With an average crossing time of around 20 minutes, we are working to maintain optimal operations during the rehabilitation period. These improvements are expected to enhance vessel reliability, streamline docking activities, reduce waiting times and improve schedule punctuality,” Ramadhani said.

The Kariangau–Penajam route handled more than 10,000 passengers and 66,000 vehicles between January and May 2026, underscoring its strategic role in supporting regional mobility and logistics flows in East Kalimantan.
