State-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) – Pelindo -, has conducted a soft launch of operations at the Nipah Transfer Anchorage Area (NTAA) in the Riau Islands, marking an initial step in expanding Indonesia’s maritime services in the strategically important Strait of Malacca.
The launch follows the Transportation Ministry’s issuance of a concession permit to Pelindo on May 6, allowing the company to provide and manage port services in the Nipa Waters concession area.
Pelindo President Director Achmad Muchtasyar said the operation of the NTAA would strengthen Indonesia’s role in international shipping routes, particularly along the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade corridors.
“The Strait of Malacca is one of the world’s major shipping lanes and holds a highly strategic position in global trade,” Achmad said in a statement on Sunday. “Indonesia should play a greater role in the international maritime services ecosystem, not only as a transit country but also as a provider of competitive and value-added maritime services.”
The Strait of Malacca connects the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea and is traversed by thousands of international vessels annually, making it a key hub for maritime activities, including ship-to-ship (STS) transfer services.
According to Achmad, the development of services in Nipa Waters is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s position in global logistics and trade networks while improving the competitiveness of the country’s maritime industry.
“The NTAA development is not merely about expanding the port business, but also part of broader efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s role in the international logistics and trade chain,” he said.
Services planned at the anchorage area include ship-to-ship transfer operations, vessel services, and floating storage facilities. Pelindo said it would develop supporting infrastructure and operations in line with international safety and service standards.
Achmad also expressed appreciation to the Transportation Ministry and other stakeholders involved in the project’s development.
“We appreciate the support and trust given by the government and all stakeholders,” he said.
“We hope the NTAA operations can run smoothly, safely, and provide optimal benefits for strengthening the national maritime sector.”
