TPK Bagendang Eyes Stronger H2 Performance after Q1 Adjustments

The Bagendang Bumiharjo Container Terminal (TPK Bagendang) used the first quarter of 2026 to strengthen operations and improve efficiency as it navigated softer cargo volumes at the start of the year.

The terminal handled 25,063 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the January–March period, reflecting an adjustment from a year earlier amid shifting distribution patterns and industrial activity, management said.

Industry players cited a temporary drop in vessel calls in recent months, partly due to congestion at origin ports.

“There has been a decrease in ship calls over the past two months due to full berths at several ports of origin amid traffic surges,” said M. Arif Wicaksono, Branch Manager of PT Meratus Line for Kumai and Sampit.

“Some vessels were diverted to other ports, but conditions are gradually improving and we expect throughput to rise in the coming months.”

In response, the terminal has rolled out measures to optimize yard utilization, improve equipment use and strengthen planning and control functions, with a focus on reducing berthing times and increasing productivity.

Terminal Head Akhmad Fajar said the first quarter marked a key phase in operational transformation.

“We are using this period to accelerate improvements, particularly in berthing efficiency, equipment utilization and stakeholder coordination,” he said.

He added that service levels had been maintained despite lower volumes and expressed optimism about a recovery as logistics activity picks up.
