TPK Panjang Adds Post Panamax Crane to Boost Capacity

Container Terminal (TPK) Panjang has added a Post Panamax quay container crane (QCC) as part of efforts to increase loading and unloading capacity and improve logistics services in southern Sumatra, the container terminal operator IPC TPK said.

The new crane arrived at Panjang Port aboard the MV Zheng Hua 37 from China and forms part of an investment program by Pelindo Terminal Petikemas aimed at strengthening terminal infrastructure amid rising container traffic.

With the addition, IPC TPK Panjang now operates four QCC units to support vessel services and container handling activities at the terminal.

IPC TPK Panjang Area Manager Anang Subagyono said the investment was intended to improve operational productivity and support growing logistics demand in the region.

“The addition of this Post Panamax QCC is a strategic step to increase service capacity and terminal productivity,” Anang said in a statement on Friday. “We want to ensure that IPC TPK Panjang is able to meet the needs of service users as logistics activity and container flows increase in southern Sumatra.”

Container throughput at the terminal reached 128,675 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, up around 24% from 103,700 TEUs recorded in 2024, according to company data.

The Post Panamax crane has a 45-meter outreach and is capable of handling vessels with container arrangements of up to 16–17 rows, allowing the terminal to serve larger ships more efficiently.

Following the vessel’s arrival, the crane will undergo a roll-off process, system installation, commissioning tests and integration with the terminal operating system before entering full commercial operation.

Anang said the additional equipment was expected to strengthen Panjang Port’s role as a logistics gateway in southern Sumatra and support regional economic activity.

“The arrival of this QCC Post Panamax unit marks a new chapter in the modernization of Panjang Port,” he said.
