The collapse occurred around 10:00 WITA in Block D of the container stacking yard, involving RTG 13, which was positioned for receiving and delivery activities, a key part of container handling operations.

“At the time of the incident, the operator was inside the RTG cabin. We’re relieved to report that the operator is safe and currently undergoing further medical observation at the Bitung Navy Hospital,” said Widyaswendra, Corporate Secretary of PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas, in a statement on Wednesday.

In response, the company quickly secured and cleared the area surrounding the fallen crane.

Additional safety and traffic arrangements were implemented within the terminal to ensure uninterrupted port operations.

Despite the incident, cargo handling for vessels MV Oriental Gold and MV Tanto Jaya, which were berthing at the time, proceeded without disruption.

“Terminal services to all ships are operating according to plan,” Widyaswendra assured. “We are also assessing the extent of the damage to begin the necessary repairs.”

Immediate action was taken to manage any potential environmental risks, including the containment and cleanup of an oil spill from the RTG’s machinery. “We are working to prevent fire hazards and environmental contamination, while also repairing any affected equipment and infrastructure,” he added.

PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas has launched a full investigation, in collaboration with relevant authorities, to determine the root cause of the crane collapse. “Understanding what led to the incident is essential—not only to prevent a recurrence at TPK Bitung but also to strengthen safety standards across all our terminal locations,” said Widyaswendra.

As part of its response plan, the company will also conduct a comprehensive inspection of all operational equipment to ensure continued safety and reliability in its loading and unloading processes.
