PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS)’ container throughput rose 3% year-on-year in the first half of 2025 (H1 2025), as international trade activity showed steady growth, the terminal operator said on Monday.
TPS handled 734,548 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from January to June, up from 713,548 TEUs in the same period last year. Overall throughput, including both international and domestic cargo, increased 1.8% to 768,518 TEUs.
June 2025 volumes reached 135,951 TEUs, a 1.58% rise from May’s 133,841 TEUs. International containers accounted for 130,299 TEUs in June, up from 127,873 TEUs in May. Domestic container throughput edged down slightly to 5,662 TEUs from 5,968 TEUs.
Export activity led the growth in international container flows, rising 4.09% year-on-year to 361,218 TEUs in the first half. Imports rose 1.75% to 372,961 TEUs over the same period.
June’s international trade balance leaned slightly toward exports, which made up 51% of international container volume with 65,443 TEUs. Imports stood at 64,856 TEUs, or 49% of the total, mirroring the ratio recorded in May.
The number of ship calls to TPS climbed to 114 in June, up 8.6% from 105 in May, reflecting increased shipping activity through the port.
“The 3% growth in throughput reflects continued stakeholder confidence in TPS’s operational reliability,” said Corporate Secretary Erika Asih Palupi.
“We remain optimistic that this upward trend will continue as we enhance our services to support stable logistics flows.”
TPS operates a 1,000-meter international pier and a 450-meter domestic pier, supported by 12 container cranes. The terminal reported average handling productivity of 52 boxes per ship per hour in the first half, exceeding the national benchmark of 48 boxes per hour set by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation.
TPS maintains a dominant 83% market share for international containerized trade at Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak Port, one of Indonesia’s busiest maritime hubs.
