INSA Jaya Honors Capt. Teddy Gunawan’s Legacy in Pilotage and Towage Services

The Jakarta chapter of the Indonesia National Shipowners’ Association (INSA Jaya) held a farewell gathering on Friday, July 18, 2025, to honor Capt. Teddy Gunawan, who officially retired on July 1 from his position as Senior Manager at Pelindo Jasa Maritim, a subholding of PT Pelindo focusing business on pilotage and towage.

Capt. Teddy was celebrated for his professionalism, leadership, and hands-on approach during his years overseeing pilotage and towage services at Indonesia’s largest and busiest seaport, Tanjung Priok.

“Capt. Teddy has shown exceptional performance during his time at the port. His leadership ensured smooth and safe navigation for countless vessels,” said INSA Jaya Chairman Andi Patonangi.

“We deeply appreciate his contribution to maritime safety and operational efficiency,” Andi said further.

Pilotage and towage are critical services in ensuring the safety and precision of vessel movements within port waters. At Tanjung Priok, these services are essential given the port’s high traffic volume, handling over 60% of Indonesia’s sea cargo traffic.

During his tenure, Capt. Teddy was responsible for coordinating dozens of pilot assignments daily, ensuring that large commercial vessels could enter and exit the port without incident. His role often involved direct communication with shipmasters, port operators, and international shipping lines.

“He carried out his duties with a high level of professionalism. We always saw him working with full commitment to serve the port’s needs,” said Pahala S, INSA Jaya’s Vice Treasurer.

Treasurer Sunarno described Capt. Teddy as consistently responsive and proactive in handling shipping company concerns. “He was not only capable, but also quick to act when needed. Shipping lines appreciated his clarity and promptness,” he said.

Capt. Teddy’s leadership was instrumental in reducing waiting times and enhancing coordination between tugboats and pilot crews, INSA members noted. His practical experience and ability to manage crisis situations, such as during high-congestion periods or bad weather, were particularly valued by the shipping community.
