TPK Ambon, a container terminal of state-owned port operator PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas (SPTP), has electrified its quay container crane (QCC), marking a significant step to modernize operations and cut carbon emissions at one of eastern Indonesia’s key logistics hubs.
The transition to electric-powered cranes is part of Pelindo’s broader strategy to improve operational efficiency and support the country’s green port initiative.
According to TPK Ambon Terminal Head Yandi Sofyan Hadi, electrifying the cranes will drastically reduce fuel consumption, from 126,315 liters to just 7,893 liters per crane annually, saving more than 118,000 liters per year per unit.
“This electrification makes loading and unloading faster, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly,” Yandi said in a statement. “We want to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”
The Ambon terminal currently operates two QCCs. In addition to reducing fuel usage, the switch to electric power is expected to cut down air and noise pollution in the surrounding port area — a move welcomed by local stakeholders.
Key Step toward Logistic Transformation
H.B. Sirait, Chairman of Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI/ILFA) Chapter Maluku, called the initiative a strategic step for logistics transformation in the region.
“We appreciate the Ambon terminal’s move to electrify its equipment, especially the QCCs,” Sirait said. “This will directly improve logistics efficiency, reduce vessel waiting times, and ultimately help lower operational costs — a longstanding challenge in eastern Indonesia.”
Sirait added that ALFI/ILFA is committed to supporting the port modernization program, calling the electrification not only a technological upgrade but also a demonstration of shared responsibility for sustainable logistics.
The upgrade is part of a wider push by Pelindo Group to implement green technologies across its terminals. In preparation, PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas has conducted technical training for crane operators and maintenance staff. The program also included a community outreach component, with a prayer ceremony and a donation to the Al-Madinah Ambon Orphanage.
With a focus on workforce development, equipment modernization, and community engagement, TPK Ambon says it aims to offer port services that are efficient, environmentally conscious, and socially responsible.
