Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has created a milestone in supporting trade between Indonesia and Middle East. This leading liner shipping company headquartered in the United Arab Emirates with a network of over 70 offices across 28 countries has just started its direct service from Jakarta to Middle East.
Its first service from Jakarta was marked by the maiden call of MV ESL Kabir, a Portugal flag containership with 275m length overall (LOA) and 40m beam, to New Priok Container Terminal One (NPCT1) on May 30, 2024.
On its maiden call, the MV ESL Kabir unloaded as many as 793 boxes of container and loaded 1,000 boxes of container, according to NPCT1 data.
As reported earlier, ESL, under a consortium with other 6 partners (shipping lines), has just launched the Southeast Asia Gulf India (SGI) service, revamped from the previous VGI service.
The SGI is a butterfly service with of the loops covering Jakarta – Port Klang – Mundra – Jebel Ali – Dammam – Mundra – Port Klang – Laem Chabang. Its other loop covers Laem Chabang – Singapore – Port Klang – Nhava Sheva – Jebel Ali – Dammam – Nhava Sheva – Port Klang – Cai Mep – Jakarta.

NPCT1 Management, ESL team, and related port users welcome SGI Service
This provides a direct service from Jakarta to Mundra, India, and from Nhava Sheva, India, into Jakarta. Using the transshipment hubs of Port Klang and Jebel Ali, customers can access key ports in the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East, Red Sea, and East Africa.
The maiden voyages departed from Laem Chabang on 16th May and from Cai Mep on 19th
May. Coverage within Southeast Asia and India has increased with the addition of Singapore, Jakarta and Mundra to the service rotation.
Commending this new service, President Director of TISCO Sindo Logistics, as agent of ESL in Indonesia, Noah Haji underlines the increasing potencies of trade between Indonesia with India and Middle East. ESL, he says, understands that the country presents immense potential, with a positive macroeconomic outlook, and a strong domestic market.
“As part of the company’s commitment to creating innovative network solutions for its customers, ESL is actively looking to grow its footprint in Indonesia and enhance connectivity to and from the country,” he said.
“In view of that, through this service, ESL will provide cargo direct shipment from Indonesia (Jakarta) to India and Middle-East,” said Noah.
ESL is a leading liner shipping company headquartered in the United Arab Emirates. With a
network of over 70 offices across 28 countries, ESL connects communities and businesses across the dynamic regions of Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East and Red Sea, and Africa, operating an annual capacity of around 700,000 TEU.

Dhany Novianto: “SGI Service will call weekly to Jakarta (NPCT1).”
Echoing the view, Dhany Novianto, Managing Director of PT. TISCO Sindo Logistics amended the potential market among the countries covered by the services.
“We see a good market trend between Indonesia and India. We also see an increasing market between Indonesia and Middle East,” Dhany said.
The SGI Service, explained Dhany, would deploy as many as 11 containerships with capacity of more than 5,000 TEUs each. These vessels would be deployed by seven consortium members, in which ESL would deploy four vessels, including MV ESL Kabir.
“As the leader of the consortium, ESL will deploy more vessels compared to other consortium members,” Dhany explained.
“SGI Service will call weekly to Jakarta (NPCT1). We plan to expand to other destinations in Indonesia,” Dhany said further. He said, the service would be expanded to other destinations in Indonesia in which Surabaya (Tanjung Perak) is eyed as the next destination that will be put into the loop.
NPCT1 President Director Takayuki Hori said welcome with this service and appreciated ESL and other member of the consortium of their trust to choose NPCT1 as the first port of destination in Indonesia.
“Our high gratitude to ESL and other members of consortium joining in this SGI Service. We are very honored as we are trusted to handle this service,” Hori said in his remark speech for welcoming the maiden call of MV ESL Kabir.

Takayuki Hori: “This service will help our terminal throughput increase.”
Hori expects the service will encourage to increase the trade volume between Indonesia and Middle East in general and to help increase the throughput of NPCT1 in particular. “Of course, this service will help our terminal throughput increase,” he said, adding that the SGI Service will add NPCT1 total service from currently 13 services.
Noah and Dhany appreciate a fast loading/unloading process of NPCT1. NPCT1 deployed 4 quay container cranes (QCC) to serve MV ESL Kabir. “The loading/unloading run faster than we expect. High appreciation to NPCT1,” Dhany said.
