Fishery Products Export Boosted Biak Port to Exceed Throughput Target

Container throughput and ship calls of Biak Port in 2023 shew a positive growth, exceeding target and was higher than previous year realization (2022), thanks to the increasing volume of fishery products export from the island.

Data from Pelindo Regional 4, the operator of the port, tells that the throughput of the port in 2023 reached 13,896 TEUs, achieving 104.18% year-on-year, from the throughput realization in 2022. The ship calls, meanwhile, reached 3,688,188 GT, achieving 102.53% of realization of 3,597,351 GT, or slightly increased by 2.53% YoY.

According to Silas Warfandu, General Manager (GM) of Pelindo Regional 4 Biak, both the container throughput and shipcalls also exceeded the targets (RKAP) of 2023. “Our container throughput reached 104.11% of our RKAP (target), while shipcalls by 100.06%,” he said.

Biak is a small island located in Cendrawasih Bay near the north coast of Papua Province. Even though it is a small island, but Biak has provided significant contribution to the economy of Papua region.

Export values of this 2,602.00 km² square island has provided high contribution to the state income, reaching trillions of Rupiah a year. Products of fishery products, especially Tuna Fish, remain the leading export commodities.

In addition to such potential export, the transformation programs the Pelindo had taken in the last two years (post-merger) has also supported the port performance, thus encouraging more cargoes and ship calls to come.
