State port operator Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar recently held an emergency response simulation (PKD) to ensure the readiness of port services ahead of the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year (Nataru) sea transportation period. The simulation, conducted at the Soekarno Pier in Makassar Port, involved coordination among various relevant agencies.
The exercise simulated a fire scenario both within the passenger terminal and in the waters surrounding Makassar Port. The goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of emergency response procedures, inter-agency coordination, and the readiness of safety facilities at the port.
Iwan Sjarifuddin, General Manager of Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar, emphasized that the simulation was a proactive step to ensure all parties are prepared for potential emergencies during the high passenger traffic expected over the Nataru period.
“This simulation is part of Pelindo’s commitment to safeguarding the safety and comfort of port users, especially during the busy holiday season. Through this exercise, we can assess and improve our emergency response protocols, particularly at Makassar Port,” said Iwan.
The simulation, held on Monday, December 16, 2024, involved various stakeholders, including the Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), Pelindo Port Safety and Security Unit, TNI/Polri, the Fire and SAR Services, and medical teams.
The event proceeded smoothly and was praised by all parties involved. Jusmin, Acting Head of the Sea and Coast Guard Unit (KPLP) at the Makassar Main KSOP, emphasized the importance of good coordination between Pelindo Regional 4 and related agencies to ensure safety during the Nataru transportation period.
“This simulation is a clear demonstration of the readiness of all parties to handle emergency situations at the port, providing reassurance to the public using sea transportation services,” Jusmin stated.
Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar also reminded all port users to adhere to safety protocols and to report any suspicious activities in the port area immediately.
Anticipates Christmas and New Year Travelers Surge
In addition to the emergency response simulation, Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar has undertaken several initiatives to prepare for the expected surge in port activity during Christmas and New Year (Nataru) season.
These preparations include enhancing passenger terminal facilities, optimizing ship schedules, and adding operational personnel to ensure the smooth flow of passengers and cargo.
As a key player in Indonesia’s logistics sector, Pelindo, as part of the State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), is dedicated to ensuring the seamless operation of sea transportation services during the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 periods. The company remains committed to prioritizing the security, safety, and comfort of its service users.
