In preparation for the 2024/2025 Christmas and New Year (Nataru) season, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) is undertaking significant renovations at Selat Panjang and Gunung Sitoli ports. This initiative underscores Pelindo’s commitment to enhancing the homecoming experience for travelers across Indonesia. The upgrades align with this year’s Nataru transportation theme: “Fun Nataru Holidays 2024/2025”.
Pelindo’s corporate commitment to passenger safety and comfort is evident in these renovations. “These upgrades are a priority due to the high passenger traffic and the critical role these ports play in connecting local communities,” explained Pelindo’s Corporate Secretariat Group Head, Ardhy Wahyu Basuki.
Ardhy further noted that the renovations were in line with directives from the Ministry of SOEs to ensure safe, comfortable travel experiences. The anticipated surge in passenger numbers during the 2024/2025 holiday season is expected to rise by 12.5%, reaching up to 2.2 million travelers, compared to last year.
Modern Ports
Selat Panjang Port, located in the Riau Archipelago, has been thoroughly renovated to enhance passenger experience. The newly designed terminal now features a spacious waiting room with increased capacity: the domestic waiting room accommodates up to 250 passengers, while the international waiting room holds 180. Additionally, the terminal is equipped with advanced multimedia systems that display real-time departure information for travelers.
Other upgrades include a modernized sanitation area and the construction of a trestle and connecting bridge to the international pontoon, which improves access for passengers. Last year, Selat Panjang Port welcomed 570,000 passengers, with Batam and Tanjung Balai Karimun as the primary routes.
On Nias Island, Gunung Sitoli Port has undergone a comprehensive transformation, giving it a more modern and organized look. The upgrades include a fully air-conditioned waiting room, VIP lounge, lactation room, ample seating, restrooms, a canteen, and a prayer room—facilities designed to provide travelers with maximum comfort.
The largest port on Nias Island now boasts a 600-meter passenger terminal with a capacity of 500 people, along with improved road infrastructure and other support services. Annually, Gunung Sitoli Port serves around 400,000 passengers, primarily traveling to and from Sibolga.
International-Standard Service Vision
“This transformation is part of Pelindo’s broader vision to deliver international-standard port services,” said Ardhy Wahyu Basuki. “We aim for every journey through our ports to be a pleasant one. These renovations are not just about enhancing the ports’ aesthetics, but also ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience for all passengers.” As Pelindo continues to prioritize passenger experience, the renovations at Selat Panjang and Gunung Sitoli Ports mark significant milestones in improving the country’s transportation infrastructure and accommodating the growing demand during the holiday season.
