Indonesia’s leading container terminal the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) on Monday inaugurated a fleet of electric-powered heavy equipment as part of its push to boost productivity and strengthen its competitiveness amid intensifying competition in the national and global port industry.
The terminal operator introduced two electric powered side loaders and two reach stackers, marking a step in its broader equipment modernisation programme aimed at improving operational performance and service reliability.
JICT Deputy President Director Budi Cahyono said the investment responds to growing cargo volumes, tighter service expectations and rising regional competition among ports.
“We are facing increasingly complex industry dynamics – volume growth, demands for faster service and intense competition,” Budi said at the inauguration ceremony. “The addition of these EV units helps address productivity challenges and supports JICT’s efforts to remain competitive.”
According to Budi, the new equipment will strengthen container handling capacity and help reduce potential bottlenecks as throughput continues to rise.
Electric-powered equipment offers more stable performance, lower vibration and greater precision, he said, while simpler maintenance requirements are expected to improve equipment availability.
“High equipment readiness provides operational certainty, which is the foundation of operational excellence,” Budi added.
Beyond operational gains, JICT said fleet electrification supports its sustainability agenda by reducing exhaust emissions, lowering noise levels and improving working conditions at the terminal.
“The port of the future must be clean, smart and efficient,” Budi said. “The use of electric equipment is part of our long-term commitment to meeting global green port standards.”
