Mitigation in Place, Tanjung Priok Port Fully Operational despite Heavy Rainfall

Indonesia’s busiest port, Tanjung Priok, continues to operate normally despite heavy rainfall across Jakarta, with authorities implementing flood-mitigation measures to ensure uninterrupted logistics and shipping activities, the port operator said on Monday night.

The port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia Regional 2 Tanjung Priok said there have been no disruptions to vessel movements, cargo handling or terminal operations at the port.

“All terminals at Tanjung Priok Port are operating normally. Ship berthing, loading and unloading, and container movements are proceeding as planned and without technical issues,” said Yandri Trisaputra, Executive General Manager of Pelindo Regional 2 Tanjung Priok, in a written statement.

Pelindo said traffic flow within the port area remains smooth, with entry and exit gate systems operating optimally. Field teams are coordinating closely with terminal operators to prevent congestion and vehicle build-ups, the company added.

To mitigate potential flooding, Pelindo has intensified monitoring of water levels at key locations, including the Kali Kresek sluice gate, while conducting routine drainage cleaning and waste removal.

“Monitoring is carried out regularly to ensure water levels remain within safe limits and do not affect port operations or surrounding communities,” Yandri said, adding that maintaining drainage systems and waterway cleanliness is critical to minimizing flood risks.

The company has also placed water pumps on standby, optimized internal drainage systems, and deployed operational, health and safety (HSSE), and port security personnel during periods of extreme weather.

Coordination with the port authority, local governments and relevant agencies remains ongoing to safeguard operations and maintain the flow of national logistics.

Yandri urged port users and the public to remain vigilant, particularly when accessing the port area during heavy rainfall.

Separately, the Tanjung Priok Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) said it continues to monitor shipping safety and port security amid the adverse weather conditions.

“KSOP Tanjung Priok is actively overseeing water conditions and port activities. So far, all shipping operations, ship berthing and port services are running safely and in line with safety regulations,” said KSOP Head Capt. Heru Santoso.

He said coordination between KSOP, Pelindo, terminal operators and other agencies has been strengthened to anticipate potential impacts from extreme weather, including increased rainfall across Jakarta and surrounding areas.

“Ensuring compliance with safety procedures by both vessels and port operators is essential. Strong inter-agency coordination is key to maintaining smooth port operations without compromising safety,” Heru said.
