Tree-planting initiative in South Sulawesi reinforces environmental conservation efforts, supports carbon absorption, and contributes to Indonesia’s sustainable development agenda through ESG implementation and SDG commitments.
PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim (PJM), a subsidiary of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), planted 2,500 hardwood trees in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, on June 18 as part of its Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, underscoring its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The activity formed part of a nationwide initiative by the Pelindo Group to commemorate World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5. In total, 20,000 trees were planted simultaneously across Indonesia, with PJM contributing 2,500 seedlings in Tanralili District, Maros.
The program involved PJM management and employees, local government officials, environmental groups and community representatives, reflecting a collaborative approach to long-term conservation efforts.
“Today, PJM planted 2,500 hardwood seedlings with strong carbon absorption capabilities, including teak and mahogany, which provide both ecological and economic benefits,” said Tubagus Patrick, Senior Vice President of Corporate Secretary at PJM.
He said Tanralili was selected as the planting site because large-scale and structured planting is needed to maximize carbon storage and generate measurable environmental impact.
“The location was chosen because calculating carbon storage impacts requires patterned planting across a sufficiently large area,” Patrick said.
Local authorities welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that similar programs would continue in the future.
Sudarmin, head of Tanralili District, thanked PJM for supporting environmental preservation efforts in the area.
“We hope this program can be expanded to other parts of Tanralili and include different types of trees, such as fruit-bearing species, which can also provide economic value to local communities,” he said.

The tree-planting program is part of PJM’s broader commitment to implementing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the environmental pillar. The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 13 on climate action and Goal 15 on protecting terrestrial ecosystems.
Established on Oct. 1, 2021, following the integration of Indonesia’s state-owned port operators into Pelindo, PJM manages a range of maritime and port-related businesses, including marine services, port equipment services, shipyard operations, dredging solutions and port utility services.
The company operates across Indonesia, from Malahayati in Aceh to Merauke in Papua, and provides integrated maritime services through a network of subsidiaries and affiliated companies.
PJM said environmental sustainability remains a key component of its corporate strategy as it seeks to balance business growth with responsible stewardship of natural resources and support national efforts to address climate change.
