Priok Operations Normal Despite Nearby Road Congestion

Operations at Indonesia’s busiest port, Tanjung Priok, are running normally and remain under control despite traffic congestion on several surrounding roads, state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) said on Friday.

Pelindo Regional 2 Tanjung Priok said monitoring showed no significant queues at port entrances or exits, and all terminal gate systems were functioning normally.

“Traffic conditions within the Tanjung Priok Port area are safe and under control. Loading and unloading activities, container movements, and terminal services continue without disruption,” said Yandri Trisaputra, Executive General Manager of Pelindo Regional 2 Tanjung Priok.

Traffic congestion was reported on the evening of Jan. 8 on public roads outside the port’s operational area, particularly those leading to warehouse and depot zones in Cilincing, Marunda and Cakung Cilincing. The congestion was caused by a surge in trailer truck traffic during certain hours, Pelindo said.

Pelindo added that yard capacity at the port remains within safe limits. As of 8:00 a.m. local time on Jan. 9, most terminals recorded a Yard Occupancy Ratio (YOR) below the standard threshold of 65%.

To help ease traffic flow and reduce congestion on public roads, Pelindo said it is working with relevant authorities to implement traffic management and operational support measures. These include facilitating limited and situational access for freight vehicles through toll roads, based on on-site conditions and coordination results.

Pelindo has also deployed mitigation measures on the ground in cooperation with the local transportation agency, including providing towing assistance for vehicles experiencing technical problems around the port area to prevent traffic buildup.

The company said it continues to coordinate closely with North Jakarta and Tanjung Priok port police, the Port Authority (KSOP), the transportation agency and other relevant officers to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimise the impact of congestion around the port.
