Abdul Azis, Executive Director of Pelindo Regional 4, explained that last year’s data revealed the top five ports with the highest number of passengers in Region 4 during the Eid homecoming season were Makassar Port, Balikpapan Port, Ambon Port, Parepare Port, and Ternate Port.

Meanwhile, the ports with the highest ship calls were Manado Port, Ternate Port, Ambon Port, Kendari Port, and Makassar Port.

“To anticipate the increased passenger and ship traffic during this year’s Eid homecoming season, Pelindo Regional 4 has implemented several key preparations,” said Abdul Azis.

“These include upgrading port facilities, particularly passenger waiting areas, and enhancing other supporting services to ensure a comfortable experience for travelers,” he said further.

The company has also optimized operations by increasing personnel on the ground to speed up embarkation and disembarkation processes. Additionally, Pelindo is coordinating closely with stakeholders, such as KSOP (Harbour Master and Port Authority), shipping lines, and security forces, to ensure smooth passenger and ship flow.

Safety and security have been reinforced through regular inspections of facilities and the operational readiness of ships. “We’re also utilizing a digital system to improve access to real-time information for passengers regarding ship schedules and port services,” he added.

Yusida M. Palesang, Division Head of Operational Services for Pelindo Regional 4, noted that last year’s peak passenger flow at Makassar Port reached 114,255 people.

This year, the number is expected to rise to 117,683. Other ports are also seeing significant increases: Balikpapan Port will likely see a rise from 93,668 to 96,478 passengers; Ambon Port from 90,194 to 92,900; Parepare Port from 82,328 to 84,798; and Ternate Port from 62,909 to 64,796 passengers.

Ship calls is projected to increase by 5%, Yusida explained that Manado Port will see a rise from 153 to 161 calls, Ternate Port from 143 to 150, Ambon Port from 105 to 110, Kendari Port from 91 to 96, and Makassar Port from 87 to 91 calls.

Yusida also mentioned that the peak homecoming period is expected to begin 15 days before Eid al-Fitr, indicating that sea transportation will remain the preferred choice for travelers in eastern Indonesia.

Abdul Azis added, “We are committed to providing the best service for travelers. We will continue to improve our services and facilities to ensure passengers can travel safely, comfortably, and efficiently. With strong coordination between all involved parties, we are optimistic that this year’s homecoming flow will be even smoother than last year.”

As a state-owned enterprise engaged in port services, Pelindo will continue to monitor the development of passenger flows throughout the homecoming and return periods. The public is advised to check ship schedules regularly, arrive early at the port, and follow all safety procedures.
