Govt Backs to Foster MNP as Eastern Indonesia’s Strategic Hub

To strengthen national maritime connectivity and accelerate the development of strategic ports in Eastern Indonesia, Deputy Minister of Transportation, Suntana, encourages the Makassar New Port (MNP) to improve its key role as strategic hub for Eastern Indonesia region.

Santana, who is also the Deputy President Commissioner of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo), remarked it during his official visit to MNP on Friday, April 25, 2025.

During the visit, Suntana highlighted the vital role of MNP as a strategic logistics hub, essential for boosting the distribution of goods, lowering national logistics costs, and driving economic growth, particularly in Eastern Indonesia (Kawasan Timur Indonesia/KTI).

“Makassar New Port is a key component of Indonesia’s broader vision to become a global maritime axis,” said Suntana. “With its international-standard facilities and modern operational systems, MNP is well-positioned to enhance the competitiveness of our national logistics sector.”

He also underscored the importance of synergy among stakeholders—local governments, the private sector, and state-owned enterprises (BUMN)—to fully optimize the port’s potential.

Pelindo Regional 4 Executive Director, Abdul Azis, expressed his appreciation for the visit and the attention given to Pelindo’s ongoing efforts. He noted that the Deputy Minister’s support serves as a motivating force to continue improving services, fostering collaboration, and establishing MNP as a major logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

Azis also provided an update on the port’s development, stating that several of its key facilities are now fully operational.

“This visit exemplifies the synergy between regulators and operators,” Azis said. “Pelindo is committed to enhancing port services, upgrading infrastructure, and positioning MNP as the primary logistics gateway in Eastern Indonesia.”

The visit marks an important milestone in reinforcing MNP’s role in achieving robust national connectivity, promoting equitable regional development, and improving public welfare through the logistics and maritime sectors.

It also forms part of a broader series of inspections of National Strategic Projects (Proyek Strategis Nasional/PSN) in the maritime sector. The government’s visit reflects its ongoing commitment to fast-tracking the development of international-standard port infrastructure and ensuring readiness to support the smooth operation of national logistics—particularly across Eastern Indonesia.

As a designated PSN and one of the largest ports in Eastern Indonesia, Makassar New Port plays a critical role in enhancing maritime connectivity and driving regional economic growth.
