Pelindo Reaffirms Protocol-Based Pilotage and Towage Services on Mahakam River

State port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4 Samarinda has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting pilotage and towage operations in the Mahakam River area in strict accordance with national maritime regulations.

The assurance comes amid heightened attention to safety near key infrastructure crossings such as the Mahkota II Bridge, Mahakam and Mahulu Bridges, Tenggarong Bridge, and Ing Martadipura Bridge.

General Manager of Pelindo Regional 4 Samarinda, Capt. Suparman, emphasized that these vital operations are always coordinated with relevant technical authorities, including the Harbor Master and Port Authority Office (KSOP) and local government agencies.

“We recognize that bridge zones are highly sensitive and require meticulous navigation procedures. That is why our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in these areas are carefully crafted to minimize potential risks,” Capt. Suparman explained.

He highlighted that all navigation activities in these strategic areas involve only certified and experienced pilots and tugboat crews, ensuring safety remains a top priority.

To maintain high service standards, Pelindo routinely conducts internal evaluations, continuous training programs, and operational audits, particularly for pilotage and tugboat teams.

These efforts are part of an ongoing strategy to enhance operational reliability and safety.

Capt. Suparman also addressed the regulatory framework under which Pelindo operates. All activities, especially those in Samarinda, are carried out transparently and legally, in accordance with State-Owned Enterprise (BUMN) procurement and assignment mechanisms, and are closely monitored by the relevant oversight bodies.

“Every aspect of our cooperation—whether procurement or assignments—is based on legal frameworks and aims to provide added value for the public,” he added.

Currently, Pelindo is also enhancing support services by deploying escort tugboats to assist vessels navigating under the Mahakam Bridge—one of the most critical and trafficked routes in the region.
