PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim (SPJM), a subholding of state-owned port operator Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), conducted Lean Six Sigma (LSS) training as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, improve service quality, and strengthen competitiveness.
The training, held on Nov. 11 in Makassar, brought together 46 participants representing all SPJM Group divisions in the region. The program aimed to equip employees with practical knowledge and skills to optimize workflows, reduce operational costs, foster cross-functional collaboration, and cultivate a culture of data-driven problem-solving.
Lean and Six Sigma are complementary management methodologies: Lean focuses on eliminating waste, while Six Sigma targets reducing variation and defects to improve process quality. When applied together, the methods help organizations deliver higher-quality products and services more efficiently and at lower costs.
Tubagus Patrick, SPJM’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Secretary, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to continuous improvement. “Enhancing service quality and innovation is the responsibility of all employees. Introducing Lean Six Sigma across SPJM will support our strategy to achieve sustainable growth and strengthen competitiveness,” he said.
Participants engaged in hands-on simulations, case studies, and interactive exercises, applying Lean Six Sigma principles to real-world scenarios. The training also included software-based exercises and lessons on analyzing performance data to identify root causes and implement solutions.
Supriyadi, one of the participants, said the training helped him better understand systematic problem-solving and the importance of continuous improvement across business processes. “It gave me practical tools to ensure faster, more efficient service delivery while contributing to the company’s overall performance,” he said.
SPJM said the training is part of a broader effort to embed operational excellence in all aspects of its Marine, Equipment, Port Services, Dredging, and Shipyard (MEPS) operations.
