JICT Marks 27th Anniversary with Push toward Greener, More Sustainable Port

Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) marked its 27th anniversary on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, by reaffirming its role in global trade while accelerating its transition toward a greener, more sustainable port.

This Indonesia’s leading container terminal said it has surpassed 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in annual throughput by 2025, with cumulative handling exceeding 50 million TEUs, underscoring its position as a key hub in both domestic and international logistics networks.

“We continue to strengthen JICT’s role in global trade through improved operational performance and sustainable transformation,” President Director Ade Hartono said during the anniversary event in Jakarta.

The milestone comes as ports across Asia face growing pressure to balance rising cargo volumes with environmental targets, prompting operators to modernize equipment and adopt cleaner technologies.

At JICT, that shift is already underway. The company has begun converting key operational equipment, including rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), from diesel to electric power. It is also expanding digital services and implementing environmental management initiatives, including on-site greening programs.

“This transformation is aimed at increasing efficiency while reducing emissions without sacrificing productivity,” Ade said.

Industry observers note that electrification and digitalization have become central to port competitiveness, particularly as global shipping lines seek faster turnaround times and lower carbon footprints across supply chains.

Beyond infrastructure, JICT used the anniversary to highlight internal changes aimed at strengthening its workforce. The company introduced new uniforms designed to reflect higher standards of professionalism, alongside the launch of a Satellite Clinic to support employee health and meet “fit-to-work” requirements.

The initiatives signal what the company describes as a broader cultural shift, aligning operational improvements with employee development.

“This symbolizes the cultural transformation and empowerment of all JICT employees,” Ade added.

Vital Part of HPH Global Network

JICT’s strategic importance was also underscored by its parent network. Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Southeast Asia, said the terminal continues to play a critical role within the group’s global operations.

“JICT is a vital part of our global network, with operational standards and efficiency that are competitive in the region,” Ashworth said.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, has been working to strengthen its maritime infrastructure to support trade growth and improve connectivity across the archipelago. Ports such as JICT are seen as central to that effort, particularly as global supply chains adjust to shifting trade patterns.

Marking the occasion under the theme “27 Years of Empowering Global Trade,” JICT said it remains focused on becoming a more efficient, competitive and environmentally responsible port.

As cranes continue to move containers along Jakarta’s busy waterfront, the anniversary serves not only as a reflection of past achievements, but also as a signal of how one of Indonesia’s logistics gateways is positioning itself for a lower-carbon future.
