Toward Green Port, Priok Is Expected to Adopt Mandatory STS

Tanjung Priok Port is expected to adopt mandatory STS (shore to ship) in supplying electricity for vessels berthing at the port in line with the port vision to go green, the port electricity supplier PT EPI (Eco Power) has recalled. In addition to green port program, the STS system will help vessels to minimize fuel consumption.

This means that any vessels berthing at a terminal should use electricity from connected STS while their on-board electricity system (genset) should be turned off to minimize environment pollution.

EPI President Director Imanuddin explained that the concept of mandatory STS has been discussed with the Port Authority (OP). The OP, he said, has given a ‘green light’ and hoped the STS will be applied in the terminals gradually.

“We have discussed this (mandatory STS at some terminals) with the port authority (OP) of Tanjung Priok. The OP has given a ‘green light’ to adopt it and will soon prepared its legal basis,” said Imannudin.

“The OP has promised to further discuss about this and has scheduled some FGDs (forum group discussions) to further discuss how this plan can be realized,” he further explained.

EPI has actually been running the STS system in supplying electricity to vessels at the port (Tanjung Priok) since 2020. The first supply was done in October 15, 2020. Imannudin said that there are some indicators, including noise reduction, to say that this STS has significantly minimized the environment pollution, thus supporting the port program to go green (green port).

In addition, this STS has created efficiency in shipping fuel consumption as the STS will help a vessel engine not to work during berthing at the port, thus minimizing fuel (marine fuel) consumption.

“This service remains our (EPI’s) commitment to support the program of green port while on the other hand this was expected to cut marine fuel consumption.”

“This is our commitment to support the green port. This STS will minimize the air pollution from engine’s fuel burning during a vessel berthing at the port. This minimizes noises from vessel engine,” said Imanuddin.

In addition, according to Imanuddin, this will create cost efficiency of shipping company. “We expect this will cut the shipping companies fuel cost by 15-30%. In addition, this will give time for vessel engine to do maintenance,” he said.

EPI had procured two mobile convertors, meaning that EPI can provide this service for two vessels simultaneously. “We will procure more convertors if needed,” said Imanuddin.

PT EPI (Eco Power) is a JV company between state port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) and state electricity company PLN in supplying electric at the port, including in supply electricity to vessels through STS system.

EPI has transformed itself to ‘utilities company’, meaning that it has developed itself from its core business of energy supply to the port to other works in any port services.
